Barbell deadlift

Lift a loaded barbell from the floor to standing with a flat back to build total-body pulling strength.

AdvancedBarbellLow impactSuggested: 6 reps

How to do it

  1. Stand with the bar over the middle of your feet and grip it just outside your legs.
  2. Push your hips back, bend your knees until your shins touch the bar, and flatten your back.
  3. Drive through the floor and stand up, keeping the bar close to your legs.
  4. Lock out by squeezing your glutes, then lower the bar the same way.

Form tips

  • Push the floor away instead of yanking the bar.
  • Keep your back flat and your chest proud from start to finish.
  • Start light and master the hinge before adding weight.
