Side-lying leg raise

A floor exercise that strengthens the outer hips and glutes by lifting the top leg while lying on your side.

BeginnerMatLow impactSuggested: 12 reps per side

How to do it

  1. Lie on your side with your legs straight and stacked, resting your head on your lower arm.
  2. Lift your top leg toward the ceiling, keeping the knee and toes facing forward.
  3. Raise it to about 45 degrees, or as high as you can without rolling back.
  4. Lower the leg slowly, then finish all reps before switching sides.

Work one side, then switch. Timed sets run once per side.

Form tips

  • Keep your hips stacked and your body in one straight line.
  • Lead with your heel to keep the work in your outer hip.
